12-year-old killed while trying to cross State Road 44 in Leesburg

A 12-year-old Leesburg boy was killed Tuesday night when he was struck by an SUV while trying to cross State Road 44.

Tyler Khargie, who died of his injuries at Leesburg Regional Medical Center, was standing in the center two-way left-turn lane waiting to cross the roadway near Pasa Del Norte Avenue shortly before 7 p.m. when he was hit by a blue 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by 81-year-old Lawrence King, also of Leesburg, a Leesburg Police report states.

King was traveling west on State Road 44 when he entered the center travel lane and collided with Khargie, who was not in a crosswalk when he was hit, the report says.

Traffic was diverted around scene for approximately three hours. The crash remains under investigation and anyone with further information should contact the Leesburg Police Department Traffic Unit at (352) 787-2121.
