Calgary Stampeder Marvin Coleman is grabbed by Ian Franklin of the Edmonton Eskimos.

Wildwood commissioners this week honored a hometown football player who spent a decade in the Canadian Football League.

Last Monday was proclaimed as Marvin Coleman Day in the city.

In October, Coleman was inducted into the Central State University Hall of Fame in Wilberforce, Ohio.

While reading the proclamation earlier at a city commission meeting, Mayor Ed Wolf recalled coaching Coleman in seventh grade when the mayor was a teacher at Wildwood Middle School.

“He’s one of those people you’re especially proud of, especially that they come back to their hometown,” Wolf said.

Coleman, 46, received a standing ovation after he thanked Wolf for the honor.

With a football career that began in 1988 with the Wildwood High School Wildcats, Coleman later was a three-time All-Star in the Canadian Football League. He played cornerback from 1994 to 2003 for the Calgary Stampeders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

In college, Coleman starred as a defensive back and on the kickoff return team from 1990 to 1994 at Central State University, where he was recognized as an All-American by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

Coleman had 13 punt returns resulting in touchdowns, an NAIA record, and was named both offensive and defensive player of the game in the 1990 NAIA Division 1 playoffs.
