Villager remains in ICU after golf cart struck by vehicle that ran stop sign

A Villager remains in an intensive care unit after his golf cart was struck by a vehicle that ran a stop sign in the Village of Tamarind Grove.

John Norman Hawker, 76, of the Village of St. James, remains a patient at Ocala Regional Medical Center following the accident, which occurred Thursday afternoon at St. Charles Place and Southern Star Way.

Hawker had been on his way to a meeting of the Mayberry Club at Paradise Recreation Center when his 2018 Yamaha golf cart was struck by a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by 71-year-old Mary Ellen Hamrock of the Village of Pennecamp, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol. She had failed to stop at a stop sign, the report said.

Hawker and his wife moved to The Villages earlier this year from California. He purchased his golf cart in June.
