Additional grouting is likely needed at a sinkhole-damaged pond in The Villages.
Residents of the Village of Alhambra are once again watching the draining of Lago De Leon – despite $100,000 in recent repairs.
Community Development District 2 supervisors, in a meeting earlier this month, expressed relief that the pond was beginning to fill up again after the repairs.
“Inflow of water, of course, adds a static weight load and these collapses routinely occur until the karst honeycomb of limestone is stabilized beneath the pond,” said District Manager Richard Baier.
He said this week that additional grouting is likely needed.
The repair work at the pond included the injection of 420 cubic yards of grout to fill in the sinkholes.
Over the past decade, CDD 2 had spent $78,000 repairing sinkholes at that particular pond. The recent $100,000 repair is being funded from CDD 2’s reserves.
Village of Alhambra residents packed the Aug. 10 CDD 2 Board of Supervisors meeting to express their unhappiness with the condition of the pond. At that meeting, Tom Clark, president of the Alhambra Social Club, said his biggest concern has been home values. He pointed out that some owners paid a $32,000 premium for the privilege of living on the pond.
