Lost snowbird in golf cart arrested while searching for Brownwood Paddock Square

Robert McCauley

A lost snowbird in a golf cart was arrested while he was searching for Brownwood Paddock Square.

Robert Bruce McCauley, 58, of Newark, Del., had been at the wheel of a black two-seater Yamaha golf cart at 9:39 p.m. Friday as it was being driven in the public roadway at Buena Vista Boulevard and County Road 466A, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department. McCauley continued driving for one-tenth of a mile with the patrol’s car overhead emergency lights activated and the officer in pursuit.

After the golf cart had come to a stop, the officer was walking toward the vehicle when he heard McCauley utter a one-word expletive.

The officer suspected McCauley had been drinking, due to his watery eyes and his fumbling when attempting to retrieve his Delaware driver’s license.

McCauley, who purchased a home in March in the Village of Osceola Hills at Lake Deaton, said he was was trying to find Brownwood Paddock Square. He said he had consumed a single beer.

McCauley struggled through field sobriety exercises and at one point “tripped over his feet almost causing him to fall,” according to the arrest report. He refused to provide a breath sample.

He was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. He was released after posting $1,000 bond. He was also issued a written warning for operating an unregistered golf cart upon a public roadway.
