To the Editor:
Hans Christian Andersen once wrote an allegory entitled “The Emperor’s New Clothes” in which the emperor, who was obsessed with his raiment, was duped into believing he had been delivered of the finest clothes ever sewn until an innocent child pointed out the obvious: that the emperor was wearing nothing! I was reminded of this parable with today’s news reports that The Donald will reluctantly sign the budget deal reached by overwhelming majorities in both the House and the Senate, thus averting another government shut-down. However, The Donald (being The Donald) is not yet ready to admit to being stark naked for all the world to see.
Instead, he intends to declare a “national emergency” in an effort to obtain the billions that he wants to use to build his Wall to Nowhere. I can only hope that there is a bright, outspoken and intrepid lawyer employed by the White House who has the guts to tell Donald and his lackeys that such an action will surely result in yet one more lawsuit over his precipitous and short-sighted actions and policies, and that he will still be “naked” at the end of that exercise. Congress has finally found its spine and has stood up on its collective feet for the first time in two years. And if it becomes a battle between the Executive Branch and the Legislative Branch, The Donald will lose.
