Driver arrested on DUI charge after crashing into gate in The Villages

David Alan Turk

A driver was arrested on a drunk driving charge after crashing into a gate in The Villages.

A Community Watch driver was on duty shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday when she heard a loud “bang” from the vicinity of Canal Street and Stillwater Trail. An investigation later revealed that a 2012 Nissan Altima four-door sedan crashed into the roundabout and left gouge marks there, as well as along the median, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The vehicle continued traveling on Stillwater Trail and crashed through the gate at the entrance to the Village of Caroline.

The vehicle had a shredded tire and damage to the rim. The car also had minor damage to the hood.

The driver was identified as 63-year-old David Alan Turk, of DeBary. His speech was slurred, his eyes were bloodshot and the trooper detected the odor of alcohol, the report said.

He failed field sobriety exercises and provided breath samples that registered .123 and .109 blood alcohol content.

Turk was arrested on charges of driving under the influence, driving while license suspended and leaving the scene of a crash. He also was ticketed on charges of careless driving and failure to provide proof of insurance.
