To the Editor:
Of the three well know types of government, two are complete failures and one continues to thrive. Majority rule democracy has been described as “two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for lunch. However, liberty can be retained if the lamb is well armed and contests the vote.” Socialism repeatedly proves that it will destroy private property and personal freedom. Both of these governments produce powerful despots. History teaches that a successful, free society exhibits national pride, personal responsibility, and follows the rule of law. Our democratic republic is an example of, arguably, the most successful nation in world history. When people ignore history, break their own laws, disregard the principles of liberty, and shirk personal responsibility, they slip under the waves of destruction.
Our freedom has been paid for with great sacrifice, compassionate understanding, hard work, wisdom, and commitment. John Adams and Ben Franklin suggested that we make “things and ideas rather than persons the subject of our conversations.” Mr. Franklin further advised; “When people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”
Good advice from a couple of the founders! Our democratic republic prospers because the constitution requires that the government is limited and the citizens opportunities are not. God bless America.
