Residents to lose access to popular unsanctioned dog park in The Villages

Residents will be losing access to a popular longtime unsanctioned dog park in The Villages.

Residents for many years have enjoyed taking their dogs to the vacant property located behind the Rio Grande Family Pool and the Rio Grande Air Gun Range. Some allow their dogs to run off leash in that area.

Dogs scamper at the unofficial dog park behind Rio Grande Family Pool in The Villages.

In March, it was revealed that the Developer would be selling a quarter-acre of land at that location to the Amenity Authority Committee. The land, sold to the AAC for $10, is being used for an expansion of the air gun range, which was originally built in 1997.

Sam Wartinbee, of District Property Management, revealed at Wednesday’s AAC meeting that a fence at the air gun range will block access to the vacant land that has been used as an unofficial dog park.

Only one member of the AAC had a reaction to the news.

“We are going to make some people disappointed,” said AAC member John Wilcox.
