Lighting tunnels in the daytime in The Villages too costly for now

It has been determined that an idea for day-time lighting tunnels on the multi-modal paths in The Villages is too costly for now.

Community Development District 6 supervisors had asked that some research be performed on the topic.

Sam Wartinbee of District Property Management reported Friday that the current solar panels, which collect energy to light the tunnels at night, would each need a $5,000 upgrade that would enlarge the panel. Additional batteries would have to be installed, also.

It can be difficult to see in the tunnels in The Villages.

CDD 6 Supervisor Tom Griffith said he is worried about pedestrians in the tunnels with golf carts. He said pedestrians can be hard to see.

Although supervisors agreed the idea is too costly now, they would like to look it again when there are improvements in technology that might bring down the price.
