A Spruce Creek South woman who said her missing boyfriend hates the Florida heat called a Marion County sheriff’s deputy for help on Tuesday.
The 88-year-old woman, who lives in the 9400 block of SE 173rd Lane, told the deputy that she hadn’t heard from her 85-year-old boyfriend since 7:30 a.m. Monday. She said she volunteers at a local church and he made breakfast for her on Monday before she left their house.
The woman said she returned to the residence at about 4 p.m. on Monday and noticed their mail was on the dining room table. But she said her boyfriend and his vehicle weren’t there, a sheriff’s office report states.
The woman said the man didn’t return home Monday night and after further investigation, she realized that he’d packed some clothes, his toothbrush and diabetes medication, the report says.
The woman said the man had been complaining about the heat in Florida and had wanted to go north on vacation to get away from it and the traffic. And she said he might have headed to Georgia or Tennessee, since that is where he wanted to go on vacation, the report says, adding that the boyfriend doesn’t own a cell phone and his vehicle wasn’t equipped with OnStar or GPS tracking capabilities.
Due to the man being well-minded and capable of taking care of himself, the deputy did not put out a missing-persons alert for him. But he did issue a well-being-check alert for the man via teletype, the report says.
