Retired Sumter engineer and Fenney resident takes home prestigious honor

Mark D. Van Hala

Retired Sumter County Engineer and Village of Fenney resident Mark D. Van Hala has received a prestigious award.

Van Hala was honored with the 2019 Professional Engineer in Government Achievement and Service in the United States (PEGASUS) Award. It recognizes the engineer who has made the most outstanding contribution to the advancement and practice of engineering.

After retiring with 36 years of public service, Van Hala serves as an engineer at Dave Schmitt Engineering, Inc. His public service included serving as Sumter County engineer, Public Works Director for both the cities of Fort Walton Beach and St. Cloud, Assistant Public Works Director of the City of Yuma and as an engineer for Orange County.

Van Hala retired from the United States Naval Reserve as a lieutenant commander. He served in the Civil Engineer Corps. And on Veterans’ Day and Order of the Engineer Ceremonies, he wears his service uniform to remember and honor America’s patriots.
