A member of the Amenity Authority Committee has signed on to a call for round-the-clock lighting of tunnels in The Villages.
AAC member John Wilcox is in agreement with Community Development District 6 Supervisor Tom Griffith, who this week called on the Project Wide Advisory Committee to examine the possibility of lighting the tunnels.
Wilcox cited his own declining vision, as well as the weakening eyesight of many of his fellow Villagers, as a reason to take a closer look at lighting the tunnels at all hours. Wilcox and Griffith have both said they are worried about the lack of visibility of pedestrians walking in the tunnels.
He pointed to tunnels that he says are particularly dangerous – the tunnel that leads from Laurel Manor Recreation Center to the pathway to Saddlebrook Recreation Center and the tunnel at the Village of Belvedere that is frequented by students walking to and from The Villages Charter School.
AAC Chair Ann Forrester said the committee would be wise to take a wait-and-see approach to see how a proposed pilot program works for PWAC.
“I thought we would let them do the homework. We can piggyback off of their thinking,” she said.
