An 82-year-old Del Webb Spruce Creek resident called a Marion County sheriff’s deputy for help Wednesday after realizing she’d fallen for a scam on Facebook.
The woman, who lives in the 13800 block of SE 86th Terrace, said she thought she was purchasing a grant using Google gift cards. She said she responded to the post advising her of the grant because the scammer used a profile photo of someone she knew, a sheriff’s office report states.
The woman said she was told to send photos of the codes on the gift cards. She told the deputy she already had deleted the messages and phone number and couldn’t remember where she sent the photos.
The woman said she also was told to the cards didn’t work and to buy another one. She said she sent a picture of her driver’s license. And she said she finally noticed on Facebook that the scammer was in Nigeria.
The deputy advised the woman to never give out personal information or purchase gift cards to buy anything. He provided her with a case number and she could go to any sheriff’s district office to complete a prevent disclosure information form, the report says.
