A man arrested in May in the theft of a gun from a kitchen at a country club in The Villages will not be prosecuted in the case.

Thomas Taylor Allen, 22, of Summerfield, was arrested May 8 after he showed up for an interview at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at Pinellas Plaza in The Villages.

Allen had been identified as a suspect in the March 8 theft of a backpack containing a Glock 19, which was taken from the kitchen of Glenview Country Club. The camouflage backpack also contained a spare magazine, Bluetooth speaker, tourniquet and a bottle of cologne.

Allen had been captured on video surveillance removing the backpack from the kitchen.

Allen admitted it was him when he was confronted with a still image from the surveillance. He said he had done some catering for the country club and was familiar with the kitchen.

Allen was arrested on a felony charge of grand theft.

However, last month in Sumter County Court, the prosecutor’s office announced that no information will be filed in the case due to “evidence legally insufficient to prove guilt.”
