Firefighters from The Villages Public Safety Department and Sumter County Fire Rescue scrambled to a crash involving a semi and pickup truck in Wildwood early Thursday morning.

When firefighters arrived at the intersection of Main Street and Drain Road shortly after midnight, they found a Chevrolet pickup truck sticking out from under the trailer of the semi. Firefighters spent about 20 minutes extricating the injured driver, who was then airlifted to an area hospital by a UF Health ShandsCair helicopter.

Four units from The Villages Public Safety Department – Engine 46, Rescue 51, Squad 51, and Attack 45 – responded to the crash, along with EMS Battalion 31, Truck 21 and Engine 31 from Sumter County Fire Rescue. Two ambulances from American Medical Response also were called to the incident.
