Kellie Wise with her son William Wise.

A six-year-old child was killed in a tragic single-vehicle crash Thursday night in Sumter County.

William Wise was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident at the intersection of County Road 470 and County Road 315 near the northern tip of the Juniper Creek Wildlife Management Area, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

He had been a passenger in a 2009 Nissan Maxima driven by his mother, 29-year-old Kellie Wise, which had traveled off the roadway at 9:43 p.m., the report said. She overcorrected and the vehicle began to partially overturn before striking a utility pole. The child was ejected from the vehicle.

Kellie Wise suffered minor injuries and was transported to Citrus Memorial Hospital.

The report noted that neither of the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seatbelts or using a  child restraint at the time of the accident.
