A 69-year-old Summerfield woman called a Marion County sheriff’s deputy for help Monday after realizing she was the victim of fraud.
The woman, who lives in the 14200 block of SE 87th Terrace Road – just outside the walls of Del Webb Spruce Creek – said that since Aug. 1 she had been scammed out of an undisclosed amount of money. She said she had applied for a loan and received a call from someone claiming to be from a loan services company, a sheriff’s office report states.
The woman said the unidentified man said that although she had been approved for the loan, she could receive a higher amount of money if she sent him money. She said she had sent gift card numbers over the phone and still had others to provide, the report says.
The woman’s son told the deputy that he was aware of the incident. He said he and his brother have been assisting their mother with keeping an eye on her finances because she “hasn’t been thinking the same” since recently suffering a stroke, the report says.
The deputy planned to call the phone numbers the woman provided during his next shift. He provided her with the website address for the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center, advised her to keep an eye on her credit report and to call the sheriff’s office if she noticed anything suspicious appearing.
