A homeless woman was arrested in the theft of a sweatshirt from a Family Dollar store.

Melissa Marie Gordon, 39, on Saturday afternoon entered the store at 400 N. Main St. in Wildwood, put on a black sweatshirt and walked out of the store without paying for the item, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department.

A manager followed Gordon out of the store and watched her get into her vehicle. When Gordon noticed she was being watched, she took off the sweatshirt and threw it out of the window of the vehicle.

Gordon told police she is homeless and used the last of her money to buy food, the report said.

She was arrested on a charge of retail theft and booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. She was released after posting $500 bond.
