A Summerfield man connected to a highly controversial 2016 beating death in Spanish Springs Town Square is back in jail.
Corey Austin Alvut, 23, was arrested Tuesday morning by Marion County sheriff’s deputies on an outstanding Sumter County warrant. Alvut was picked up at his residence at 15250 SE 103rd Terr. in Summerfield for violating his probation on a previous case of driving with license suspended. He is being held in the Marion County Jail on no bond.
Alvut made headlines in 2017 when he dodged depositions he was supposed to give in the June 7, 2016 death of McCall’s Tavern employee Austin Stevens. Brice Hall, of Weirsdale, and Nicholas Metcalfe, of Belleview, were arrested in the case.
Circuit Judge Lawrence Semento signed the order for Almut’s arrest and he was ordered to be held behind bars until he gave a deposition. He was one of four men who had arrived at Spanish Springs Town Square in a white late-model Chrysler minivan van in June 2016 before the confrontation with Stevens over comments that were made about his girlfriend. Stevens got into an altercation with Hall and Metcalfe and later died of a brain injury suffered during the melee.
Alvut spent more than a month in the Lake County Jail before finally deciding to provide the deposition, which was sought by attorneys for both Hall and Metcalfe. He was then released from jail but ordered to stay with his grandparents in Summerfield.
Hall and Metcalfe eventually escaped jail time for Stevens’ death. Hall initially faced a charge of manslaughter but the charge was dropped after Stevens was determined to be the “initial aggressor” in the incident. Metcalfe was sentenced to six months probation after pleading no contest to a charge of battery, which had been reduced from a felony to a misdemeanor.
