Fatal crash leaves gaping hole in church on Cherry Lake Road

A fatal crash left a gaping hole in a church on Cherry Lake Road in Sumter County.

A 21-year-old Leesburg man had been at the wheel of a pickup at 8:15 p.m. Monday traveling northbound on Cherry Lake Road (also known as County Road 100) south of County Road 466 when the truck left the roadway and overturned multiple times, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A driver was killed when his vehicle crashed into a church on Cherry Lake Road.

The pickup then crashed into the Elder Mary Newsom Hudson Church located at 10456  County Road 100B in Lady Lake. The driver died at the scene of the crash.

The crash left a gaping hole in the church on Cherry Lake Road.

The name of the driver was not released due to a new FHP policy.
