Recreation director defies mask policy in presentation in The Villages

John Rohan

The recreation director of The Villages defied a policy requiring masks during a presentation to the Amenity Authority Committee on Wednesday morning at Savannah Center.

Recreation Director John Rohan’s one-hour presentation was in defense of the annual expense of the Recreation News.

A sign at the entrance to the AAC meeting re-iterated the mask policy.

Signs notifying residents that masks are required are prominently featured on the doors of the Savannah Center and a sign was placed at the entrance to the room in which the AAC met.

Every one else in attendance at the AAC meeting – including all committee members, the district manager, the AAC’s attorney and the chief of The Villages Public Safety Department – wore masks in compliance with the District-wide policy enacted in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Recreation Director John Rohan, left, went maskless while Budget Director Barbara Kays, right, adhered to the mask policy throughout the meeting.

The bulk of the morning’s presentations were handled by Budget Director Barbara Kays, who complied with the mask policy.

Vice President Mike Pence drew a firestorm of criticism earlier this month when he did not wear a mask during a visit to the Mayo Clinic. He apologized this past Sunday night during a Fox News town hall for not wearing a mask during that Mayo Clinic visit.
