Man armed with gun jailed after climbing into woman’s car in The Villages

Darrell Carfield

A man armed with a gun cloaked in a sock was arrested after climbing into a woman’s car at a grocery store in The Villages.

The woman had been followed Wednesday morning to the Winn-Dixie store at Lake Sumter Landing by 29-year-old Darrell Shane Carfield of Fruitland Park, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. Carfield got out of his vehicle and climbed into the woman’s vehicle where he displayed “an older model handgun with a black sock placed on it,” the report said.

The woman screamed when she saw the gun and tried to get out of the car. Carfield, who was “angry,” grabbed her arm and cursed at her. He demanded that she have a conversation with him.

“I will shoot your foot if you don’t start talking,” Carfield told her as he aimed the gun at her feet.

The woman broke free and ran into Winn-Dixie. While she was on the phone with law enforcement, Carfield came up behind her and took the cell phone from her. She took the phone back and called out to an employee of the store.

Video surveillance footage from Winn-Dixie verified Carfield’s presence at the store.

Carfield fled the scene, but was pulled over by a Wildwood police officer at about 11 a.m. that morning on Ragatta Boulevard at Lakeside Landings in Oxford. A .357 revolver was found in a black sock underneath the floorboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle. A .357 round of ammunition was also located next to the revolver. An Adderall pill and a fragment of an Oxycodone pill were also found in the vehicle.

Carfield was arrested on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, false imprisonment, depriving use of 911, battery and possession of a controlled substance.

The Thornton, Colo. native was booked without bond at the Sumter County Detention Center.
