Two more Villages residents and another person who lives just outside Florida’s Friendliest Hometown have tested positive for the potentially deadly Coronavirus.

Two of the patients live in Sumter County – one in The Villages and the other in Oxford – and the third one lives in the Marion County portion of the sprawling retirement mecca. Specific information about the three new patients wasn’t provided by the Florida Department of Health, but those who have tested positive recently in Sumter and Marion counties include:

  • An 89-year-old Sumter County man who hadn’t traveled recently nor had contact with another COVID-19 patient (tested positive June 8);
  • An 11-year-old Sumter County boy with an unknown travel history (tested positive June 9);
  • A 10-year-old Sumter County boy with an unknown travel history (tested positive June 9);
  • A 57-year-old Marion County woman who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient (tested positive June 7);
  • A 43-year-old Marion County woman who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient (tested positive June 7);
  • A 75-year-old Marion County woman who hadn’t traveled recently (tested positive June 8);
  • A 61-year-old Marion County woman who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact with another patient (tested positive June 8); and
  • A 73-year-old Marion County man who hadn’t traveled recently but had been in contact wither another patient (tested positive June 8).

As of Tuesday, the tri-county area was reporting 887 COVID-19 cases – an increase of eight from Monday to Tuesday. Those were comprised of 462 men, 404 women and 21 non-residents. There have been 40 deaths and 168 people have been hospitalized.

Sumter County now has 264 cases – an increase of three in a 24-hour period – among 187 men, 76 women and one non-resident. There have been 17 deaths and 45 people have required some form of hospital care.

Sixty-nine of the Sumter County cases are in The Villages, with another 122 in Bushnell – 121 of which are at the Sumter Correctional Institution (105 inmates and 16 staff members). Other cases have been identified in Lake Panasoffkee (22), Oxford (19), Wildwood (9), Webster (8), Lady Lake portion of the county (6), Sumterville (5) and Coleman (3). The federal prison in Coleman also has identified six cases among four staff members and two inmates.

Marion County now also saw an increase of three cases to 284 among 120 men, 159 women and five non-residents. There have been eight deaths and 41 people have been hospitalized.

Two of the COVID-19 cases are in The Villages and another 30 are in Summerfield. Other Marion County patients have been identified in Ocala (202), Dunnellon (13), Citra (10), Belleview (9), Ocklawaha (4), Anthony (3), Reddick (2), Silver Springs (2) and Fort McCoy (1).

Lake County is reporting an increase of two cases for a total of 339. Those include 155 men, 169 women and 15 non-residents. There have been 15 deaths and 82 people have been seen in area hospitals.

Nine of the Lake County cases are in The Villages, 17 are in Lady Lake and six are in Fruitland Park. Others have been identified in Clermont (102), Leesburg (48), Eustis (35), Tavares (23), Mount Dora (23), Groveland (19), Mascotte (14), Minneola (8), Sorrento (5), Montverde (4), Howey-in-the-Hills (3), Altoona (2), Okahumpka (1), Umatilla (2), Grand Island (1), Paisley (1) and Yalaha (1).

All told, Florida is reporting 66,000 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 1,096 in a 24-hour period. Of those, 64,448 are residents. There have been 2,765 deaths and 11,185 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
