Another Villager and a resident who lives just outside the mega-retirement community have been diagnosed with the Coronavirus as the number of cases in Florida shot past 80,000 on Tuesday.

No specific information about The Villages resident was available, but the only new case reported in Sumter County was a 75-year-old woman with an unknown travel history. The Summerfield resident wasn’t identified but the newest cases in Marion County were identified as:

  • 20-year-old women who hadn’t traveled recently nor been in contact with another patient;
  • 45-year-old woman who traveled to New Jersey recently;
  • 60-year-old man who hadn’t traveled recently nor been in contact with another patient;
  • 22-year-old man with no recent travel history;
  • 37-year-old woman with no recent travel history;
  • 25-year-old man with an unknown travel history;
  • 28-year-old listed as unknown with an unknown travel history;
  • 28-year-old woman with an unknown travel history; and
  • 19-year-old woman with an unknown travel history.

It’s unclear if any of the Summerfield cases are in the retirement communities of Del Webb Spruce Creek, Stonecrest or Spruce Creek South, as those specific numbers aren’t reported by the Florida Department of Health.

As of Tuesday, 83 Villagers had tested positive for COVID-19 – 71 in Sumter County, 10 in Lake County and two in the Marion County portion of the sprawling retirement mecca. The virus also has claimed at least two Villagers – Carol Lynch and Debbie Butler – both of whom lived in Sumter County.

The tri-county area was reporting 1,091 cases – an increase of 27 in a 24-hour period. Those are comprised of 582 men, 484 women, 22 non-residents and three people who are listed as unknown. There have been 41 deaths and 174 people have been hospitalized.

Lake County continues to pace the tri-county area with 498 cases – an increase of 16 since Monday – among 258 men, 223 women, 15 non-residents and two designated as unknown. There have been 16 deaths and 86 people have been hospitalized.

The newest Lake County patients have been identified as:

  • 72-year-old woman;
  • 55-year-old Unknown;
  • 75-year-old woman;
  • 59-year-old woman;
  • 56-year-old man;
  • 52-year-old woman;
  • 22-year-old woman;
  • 25-year-old man;
  • 26-year-old man;
  • 47-year-old man;
  • 43-year-old man;
  • 25-year-old man;
  • 22-year-old woman;
  • 20-year-old woman;
  • 59-year-old woman;
  • 29-year-old man; and
  • 27-year-old woman.

Of the Lake County cases, 20 are in Lady Lake and six are in Fruitland Park. Others have been identified in Clermont (133), Tavares (84), Leesburg (55), Eustis (58), Mount Dora (28), Groveland (23), Mascotte (14), Sorrento (11), Minneola (8), Montverde (5), Howey-in-the-Hills (3), Altoona (2), Okahumpka (1), Umatilla (8), Grand Island (2), Astor (1), Paisley (2) and Yalaha (1).

Sumter County increased by one to 268 cases among 188 men, 78 women and two non-residents. There have been 17 deaths and 45 people have required some form of hospital care.

So far, 122 cases have been reported in Bushnell, with all but one of those being at Sumter Correctional Institution (105 inmates and 16 staff members). Others have been identified in Lake Panasoffkee (22), Oxford (19), Wildwood (9), Webster (8), Lady Lake portion of the county (6), Sumterville (5) and Coleman (4). The federal prison in Coleman also has identified four cases among three staff members and one inmate.

Marion County increased by 10 cases Tuesday to 325 among 136 men, 183 women, five non-residents and one person listed as unknown. There have been eight deaths and 43 people have been seen in area hospitals.

At Tuesday’s Marion County Commission meeting, Mark Lander, administrator of the county’s Department of Health, said some of the new cases had been connected to Memorial Day celebrations among large groups. He said some of those people also had been in contact with others suffering from the potentially deadly virus.

The overwhelming majority of Marion County cases – 223 – have been reported in Ocala, with another 34 being reported in Summerfield and at least one in The Villages portion of the county. Others have been identified in Dunnellon (15), Citra (11), Belleview (11), Ocklawaha (7), Anthony (3), Reddick (2), Silver Springs (3), Weirsdale (1) and Fort McCoy (1).

All told, Florida is reporting 80,109 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 2,782 in a 24-hour period. Of those, 78,128 are residents. There have been 2,993 deaths and 12,206 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
