New COVID-19 cases reported just outside The Villages as Florida tops 97,000

Two more Coronavirus patients have been identified just outside the confines of The Villages as Florida soared past 97,000 cases Sunday.

The new cases were reported in Lady Lake and Wildwood, where a total of 23 and 11 patients have been identified, respectively. No specific information about either patient was provided by the Florida Department of Health, but the new patients identified Sunday in Lake and Sumter Counties include:

  • 7-year-old girl (Lake County);
  • 24-year-old woman (Sumter County);
  • 36-year-old man (Sumter County);
  • 41-year-old woman (Lake County);
  • 63-year-old man (Lake County);
  • 69-year-old man (Lake County); and
  • 78-year-old man (Lake County).

Overall, the tri-county area is reporting 1,412 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 70 from Saturday to Sunday – among 762 men, 627 women and 23 non-residents. There have been 46 deaths and 192 people have been hospitalized.

Lake County continues to lead the way in the tri-county area with 733 cases – an increase of 62 in a 24-hour period. Those are divided among 396 men, 321 women and 16 non-residents. There have been 19 deaths and 95 people have required some form of hospital care.

Clermont continues to pace Lake County with 162 cases – an increase of 27 in 24 hours. Leesburg also increased by seven cases to 90. Others have been reported in Tavares (148, at least 100 of which are at the Lake County Jail), Eustis (82), Mount Dora (41), Groveland (30), Sorrento (18), Umatilla (15), Mascotte (14), Minneola (14), The Villages (10), Montverde (8), Fruitland Park (7), Howey-in-the-Hills (4), Altoona (3), Yalaha (2), Paisley (2), Grand Island (2), Okahumpka (1), Astatula (1) and Astor (1).

Sumter County is now reporting 284 cases – an increase of two in 24-hours – among 196 men, 86 women and two non-residents. There have been 17 deaths and 46 people have been hospitalized.

Of the Sumter County cases, 78 have been reported in The Villages and another 123 have been identified in Bushnell – 119 of which are at the Sumter Correctional Institution. Other cases have been reported in Lake Panasoffkee (22), Oxford (20), Webster (11), Lady Lake portion of the county (7), Sumterville (5), Coleman (4) and Center Hill (1). The federal prison in Coleman also has identified five cases among four staff members and one inmate.

Marion County now has 395 cases – an increase of six in 24 hours. Those are divided among 170 men, 220 women and five non-residents. There have been 10 deaths and 51 people have been seen in area hospitals.

The newest Marion County patients reported over the past two days have been identified as:

  • 20-year-old woman (Ocala);
  • 22-year-old woman (Ocala);
  • 26-year-old man (Ocala);
  • 33-year-old woman (Ocala);
  • 44-year-old woman (Anthony); and
  • 76-year-old man (Ocala).

Ocala continues to lead the way with 257 cases, or 65 percent of all of the patients reported in Marion County. Others cases have been identified in Summerfield (40), Belleview (23), Dunnellon (19), Citra (11), Ocklawaha (7), Silver Springs (5), Anthony (4), Reddick (3), The Villages (2), Weirsdale (2) and Fort McCoy (1).

All told, Florida is reporting 97,291 COVID-19 cases – an increase of 3,494 in a 24-hour period. Of those, 95,139 are residents. There have been 3,161 deaths and 13,037 people have been hospitalized across the Sunshine State.
