A Villages team from Glenview Tennis Center was a finalist in the USTA Adult 65 and Over 7.0 men’s Sectional Championships.
The event was held in Orlando on Nov. 16-17. The team was part of the USTA men’s competitive tennis league representing USTA Florida, Region 2-Marion. The league consisted of four teams – two from The Villages at Glenview, one from Citrus Hills Country Club and one from Pine Ridge Community Center in Crystal River. The Villages (James) team won the region with a 6-1 record, which qualified its players for the Sectional Championships.
In the Sectional Championships, there were three teams from various USTA Florida Regions. The teams competing were Duval, Hillsborough and The Villages.
The winner was determined by the best record, or total matches won after playing each team twice. After two days of competition, The Villages and Hillsborough were tied with three wins and one loss each. The Sectional winner would be determined by the match between The Villages and Hillsborough.
The match was very competitive and the winner was decided by two third set 10-point tiebreakers. The Villages team came up a little short and fell to Hillsborough, which took home the Sectional Championship. The Villages team players were awarded a glass 2020 Sectional Finalist trophy for finishing in second place.
