A couple in The Villages who rents out a villa could face fines over an ongoing weed problem.

Robert and Alice Chapin in 2010 invested in a villa in the Mangrove Villas in Village of Pennecamp for $128,500. Their patio villa at 2230 Mangrove Lane was the subject of a deed compliance hearing Monday at the District Office at Brownwood.

A complaint was lodged March 20 regarding weeds in the landscaping beds at the villa. Community Standards spoke with the renter who promised to relay the violation to the Chapins. Community Standards met with the Chapins on April 3 and explained the property needed to be brought into compliance. On June 8, Robert Chapin indicated that he and the renter had remedied the weed problem. However, a recent check by Community Standards revealed the property was still out of compliance.

A special master hearing the case granted seven days for the weeds to be removed. If they are not removed, the District will maintain the property at a cost to the homeowner of $250 per occurrence.

In April, the couple purchased a home for $840,000 in the Village of Tamarind Grove. They have also owned a home since 2011 at 2610 Dividing Creek Path in the Village of Tamarind Grove.
