K-9 Barry was honored by Police Chief Randy Parmer, left. Barry will live out his remaining years as a pet with his handler Sgt. Richard Parrish, right.

The Wildwood Police Department has retired its police dog “Barry” after six years of honorable service.

At Monday’s Wildwood City Commission meeting, the 9-and-a-half-year-old K-9 dog was presented a plaque to commemorate the occasion of his retirement.

Sgt. Richard Parrish, who has worked with Barry on many arrests over the years, has purchased the dog from the city and will keep him as a family pet.

Police dogs are normally retired after five to seven years of service if they have no medical issues, Parrish said.
