Albert Bernard Evans, age 77, of The Villages, Florida, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 1, 2024. Al was born on May 17th, 1945, in Oakland, California, to parents Bert and Maretsa Evans. He was the youngest of four siblings, grew up in Northern California and later graduated from Sacramento State University with a BSEE degree in Electrical Engineering. Al’s love for his family, friends, and community was evident throughout his life, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Al was a devoted husband to his wife, Susan, for 54 years. Together, they raised two children, Naomi and Bryan, who were the light of his life. He was a proud grandfather to his three grandchildren, who shared in his love of adventuring. Al had a passion for the outdoors, and he and Susan enjoyed many years of boating and golfing. Over his lifetime he enjoyed water skiing, camping, gardening, and spending time with his friends and family. Al had a kind heart and an adventurous spirit; he was always willing to lend a supporting hand to anyone in need. He will be remembered for his jolly laughter, dedication to his family and love of life.
Al’s career as an engineer spanned 50 years, where he specialized in electronic warfare (EW) systems design and architecture. He started his career in the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division (NAWCWD) at Point Mugu in Southern California, transitioned to Dalmo-Victor as the Chief Scientist and Director of Army Programs in the San Francisco Bay Area. Later, Al was recruited to work as VP of Engineering for the Aerospace Electronics division for BAE Systems (formerly AEL) in the Philadelphia area. At the end of that 35-year career, moving to Delaware, he formed his own consulting company, IWT, where he continued to provide expert advice to the Navy and ITT before shifting into full retirement in 2018.
Al’s area of expertise were: Threat Warning/Situational Awareness systems, Self-Protect RF Countermeasures, and RF Electronic Attack Systems. Designs that he oversaw or contributed to are currently deployed in over 5000 aircraft, including: EA-6B, EA-18G, F/A-18C/D/E/F, F-16 Block 50/52, CV/MV-22, MH-47/60, C-130, AH-64, OH-58, UH-60, AH-1W/Z, etc.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan; daughter, Naomi; son, Bryan; sister, Patricia; brother, Michael; grandchildren: Eden, Emma and Henry, along with many other family members and friends.
Al was predeceased by his parents Bert and Maretsa, and his brother, Gene (MIA, Korean War).
