Scott M. Downing, age 81, passed away on September 17, 2024, at Cornerstone Hospice in The Villages, Florida. Scott was born in Garden City, KS to Madison and Ruth Downing on September 2, 1943.
He attended school in Deerfield, KS. He graduated from Kansas University in 1965 and received his MBA from Tulane in New Orleans, LA in 1986. He married Shyla on December 13, 1969, in Las Vegas. He worked as an Information Technologist for TWA for 18 years, then as a Director and Assistant Vice President of other companies until he ended up teaching high school math for four years at Leesburg High School.
He was a President of the Kearney, MO, Lion’s Club and worked with Junior Achievement in Kansas City, MO.
He ran in the New York City and Kansas City marathons. He was a member of the Krewe of Mid-City Mardi Gras crew in New Orleans. In The Villages, he played softball, pickleball, golf and was a Cantor with St. Timothy Catholic Church, sang with The Village Voices, was a 49 gallon blood donor and a former Guardian Ad Litem.
Scott is preceded in death by his parents and his son Michael Downing.
He is survived by his wife, Shyla, sister, Karen Monroe of Newton, KS and sister Lana McDonald of Belle Vista, Arkansas. He also left many nieces and nephews.
A Mass will be held at St. Timothy Catholic Church located at 1351 Paige Place in The Villages, FL on October 24, 2024, at 10:00 a.m.
