Lanes across Interstate 75, the Florida Turnpike, and several other intersections in Sumter County were closed early Monday morning after a dump truck driver accidentally left the bed of his truck raised and crashed into an overhead bridge on I-75.

According to a statement issued by the Florida Highway Patrol, a man was driving a dump truck northbound on Interstate 75, near mile marker 333.5 at around 1:20 a.m. on Monday, March 17.

As the man approached the County Road 475 overpass on the highway, the dump truck bed struck the overpass.

The driver, a 56-year-old man from Ocala, had inadvertently left the dump truck bed in a raised position, causing the bed to shear off and become lodged under the overpass.

The truck continued to final rest just north of the impact point after the incident.

According to FHP, there were no injuries reported to the driver.

The accident led to several roadway closures and delays for local motorists.

Engineers from the Florida Department of Transportation were also called to the scene to inspect the overpass and the highway. Both were cleared at approximately 8:15 a.m.
