James Alois Vernon, age 84, passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025 at The Cornerstone Hospice House with his children near his side. He was born December 8, 1940 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey to Joseph Vernon and Viola Steib.
He was a graduate of the University of Delaware and went on to marry Nancy Marie Johnson on June 21, 1969. He worked as a Senior Accounting Analyst for Dupont until his well-earned retirement. Known to all as “Micky,” he enjoyed Disney and beach trips with his family, bridge nights with his wife and their friends, and spending time with his grandchildren. After Nancy’s death in 2014, he found enjoyment in Monday poker nights, weekly breakfast get-togethers, and Sunday brunches with his friends, along with watching his beloved Giants on football Sunday (though he said their record the past few years made it not quite as enjoyable).
He is survived by his four children, Kristin Vernon Helvig, Michael James Vernon, Tracy Vernon-Platt, and Rebecca Operacz, as well as his four grandchildren, Caleb and Kyra Helvig and Fletcher and Elizabeth Platt. Last, but certainly not least, he leaves behind his beloved cat, Lucy, who brought him endless comfort and joy after Nancy’s death.
Family and friends are invited to St. Mark’s the Evangelist Church, 7081 SE Highway 42, Summerfield, FL at 10 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Cornerstone Hospice House at The Villages.
