A Summerfield woman was arrested on a charge of assault after allegedly threatening to kill her daughter and her dog with a knife.

Deputies responded to a domestic dispute at an undisclosed Marion County residence around 1:25 a.m. Tuesday, according to an arrest report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Upon arrival, they met with a woman who advised that her mother, 53-year-old Kathleen Sugar, threatened her and her dog with a knife.

The daughter explained her dog has just given birth to a large litter of puppies, but some of them died due to the dog falling asleep on them. Sugar got upset at the situation, grabbed a knife and put it through the kennel, telling the dog she would kill it. The daughter started recording her, which was when she turned toward the daughter with the knife in her hand, the report said.

Sugar approached her daughter and told her that if she videotaped her, she would kill her. She came closer with the knife raised above her head in a menacing manner. She had threatened to kill her daughter in the past, which had already been reported, the report said.

The deputy then spoke to Sugar who advised that the daughter was supposed to be watching her dog since the dog recently went under a medical procedure to be “fixed.” The dog had killed four puppies that day by falling asleep on them, the report said.

Sugar had been getting frustrated and stressed due to the victim not watching the dog. She admitted to telling the victim she would kill the dog. After being read her rights, she also admitted to grabbing a knife and threatening the dog. She denied threatening the victim with a knife, the report said.

The deputy next spoke with a witness, who was Sugar’s grandson. He stated the dog had been killing the new puppies, and Sugar was getting upset. Sugar grabbed a knife, went to the dog and told it, “If you kill another dog, I’ll kill you.” The witness did not know if Sugar threatened the victim because he only saw when she threatened the dog, the report said.

The deputy also talked to Sugar’s sister-in-law. She stated she had headphones on and did not hear anything other than yelling in the house, the report said.

Sugar was ultimately arrested on charge of assault with intent to commit a felony (domestic). She was transported to Marion County Jail to be held without bond.
