A Summerfield man was arrested for drving under the influence after allegedly passing out drunk outside his job at NAPA Auto Parts with multiple bottles of Jack Daniels.

Dispatchers got a call for service regarding 50-year-old David William McClelland intoxicated and passed out in his vehicle at work around 12:10 p.m. Monday, according to an arrest report from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. A deputy responded to the auto repair shop and saw a white Chrysler 300 sedan running and occupied by McClelland in the driver’s seat. He smelled overbearingly of alcohol, as did the inside of his vehicle. He also had extremely slow, slurred speech and bloodshot watery eyes, the report said.

Due to this, he was asked to step out of the vehicle and participate in field sobriety exercises. He was slow to get up, and as he tried to walk toward the front of the patrol vehicle, he almost lost his balance. He had to brace against his vehicle to keep from falling, the report said.

McClelland ultimately refused to do the exercises, saying he could not put his feet together because of balancing issues. He did not have any medical issues causing this but rather was unable to eat. His stomach had been upset because of alcohol consumption, the report said.

He was then placed under arrest. A search of his person revealed he did not have a valid driver’s license, only an ID card. The deputy also found three 750mL Jack Daniels bottles, two of which were empty, and two empty 200mL bottles, the report said.

McClelland later provided a breath sample of 0.184 blood alcohol content. His second attempt resulted in an error, and he started vomiting before he could try again. He agreed to give a blood sample instead, the report said.

The Michigan native was charged with DUI and operate motor vehicle without valid license. He was transported to Marion County Jail with bond set at $1,500.
