A Villager has received a suspended prison sentence in a 2024 golf cart rollover crash that injured her friends visiting from Wisconsin.

Julianne Marie Janny, 61, of the Village of Lake Denham, was sentenced this past week in Sumter County Court on a charge of driving under the influence. Janny was ordered to spend three years and two months behind bars, however Judge Mary Hatcher opted to suspend that sentence. Janny has also been placed on probation for five years and has been ordered to perform 50 hours of community service. She will also lose her driver’s license for six months.

Janny was driving a 2023 Yamaha golf cart at about 9:30 p.m. March 2, 2024 when she took “a left hand curve too fast” near the intersection of Morse Boulevard and Colony Boulevard, near the Colony Cottage Recreation Center, according to an arrest report from the Florida Highway Patrol. The golf cart overturned and landed on its right side.

Scott and Terri Moore of Hartford, Wis. were traveling with Janny in the golf cart when it crashed. Terri Moore was transported by ambulance as a trauma alert to Ocala Regional Medical Center.

Janny, who was identified by her Wisconsin driver’s license, had a “heavy odor of an alcoholic beverage,” the report said. Her speech was slurred and she had “noticeable balance issues.” She performed poorly in field sobriety exercises. She provided breath samples that registered .210 and .193 blood alcohol content.

Janny was transported to UF Health-The Villages Hospital freestanding Emergency Room at Brownwood. She was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence.

Scott and Terri Moore filed a lawsuit against Janny. The lawsuit claims Terri Moore has suffered serious injuries, mental anguish and loss of income, due to Janny’s negligent operation of the golf cart. The couple is seeking in excess of $50,000 in damages.

Scott Moore was also injured, but not as seriously.

Last year, Janny admitted herself into a 60-day inpatient program at a facility specializing in drug and alcohol treatment in Jacksonville.
