To the Editor:

A close relationship like no other, the longest undefended border in the world. We talk the same language, eat the same foods and drive the same cars, friends and relatives on both sides of the border. So what happened?

Canadians are staying away in droves, estimates are that over 30 percent less are doing the “snowbird thing” this winter. Indeed in our travels down to The Villages the first Ontario or Quebec license plates were not spotted until we crossed the Georgia-Florida line. No line at the border some 45 miles from our home in Ottawa.

I am not getting into the politics of it all, however tariffs and nonsense like making Canada the 51st state have really irritated Canada. And with that comes the bad press in Canada creating fear and untruths which just add salt to the wound. We are informing friends back home that nothing really has changed in good ol’ USA. All the Americans we “schmooze” with love Canada and this whole situation is not really talked about. Still, many Canadians are in Mexico a Caribbean and Portugal instead of America. Will they return to Florida and Arizona?

I sure I hope so. And so do most Americans

Time will tell.
