A new sign is in place designating Powell Road as a memorial roadway for Charlie Kirk.
Sumter County commissioners voted 4-1 in November to name a stretch of roadway in honor of Kirk, a conservative political activist who headed Turning Point USA, often speaking on college campuses. He was assassinated on Sept. 10.
The Republican Assembly of Sumter County championed the idea of naming the road in honor of Kirk. The RASC said the designation would “be in the best interest of the residents of Sumter County.”

Kirk spoke in The Villages about a year before his assassination.
The decision to honor Kirk with a memorial roadway has been controversial. A Village of Santo Domingo resident said the commissioners should have been embarrassed by their decision. A Village of Amelia resident said the county shouldn’t have named anything for Kirk, including a municipal dump.
