Judy Ellen Grisell, age 84, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026.
Born on November 19, 1941, Judy lived a life defined by compassion, service, faith, and deep love for her family and community. In her advanced years, she began each day with words of comfort and encouragement, faithfully reading uplifting scriptures during her daily devotions with God. Even while facing physical challenges, Judy chose joy. She focused on her capabilities rather than her limitations, a mindset that contributed greatly to her sense of well-being and fulfillment.
Judy earned her degree and teaching credential from San Francisco State University and began her career as a fourth-grade teacher in Gilroy, where she inspired young minds with patience and dedication. Beyond the classroom, she became a passionate advocate for individuals with disabilities in San Mateo County. She worked tirelessly to help bring paratransit services to the county, improving accessibility and independence for countless community members.
A woman of strong and abiding faith, Judy devoted herself to her church communities and volunteered at various churches throughout her life. She found joy in fellowship, service, and spiritual growth.
Judy had many activities and interests that spanned the years of her life. She enjoyed her writing memoir class and book club, where she shared stories, laughter, and friendship. She participated in senior exercise classes and embraced opportunities to remain active and engaged. She loved spending time with her family—going to the movies, sharing meals out, and cherishing meaningful conversations. Judy took a deep and genuine interest in the lives of her family and friends, immersing herself in their stories and celebrating each person as an individual.
In the final month of her life, Judy embraced new beginnings by joining The Villages, where she quickly formed new friendships—an enduring testament to her open heart and independent spirit. She derived great strength from striving to maintain her independence, and her efforts were truly admirable.
Judy was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lewis; her brother, Don Stevenson; her sister-in-law, Diane Stevenson; her great-granddaughter, Odessa Grisell; and her parents, Marie Stevenson and Robert Stevenson.
She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Julie and Claudia; her stepchildren, Lyle, Erin, and Lelia(Preston); her grandchildren, Justin, Jabriel, Shauna, Ariel, and Violet; her great-grandchild, Carter; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Judy’s legacy of kindness, advocacy, faith, joy, and love will live on in all who knew her.
