To the Editor:
I switched to an E-bike on the multi-modal paths after a couple of near misses with golf carts, with my traditional bike. My E-bike’s top speed is 20 miles per hour and I feel much safer being able to keep up with the flow of traffic on the multi-modal path. My bike has a bell, to alert pedestrians. If they are walking in the correct direction on the multi-modal path, they can see me coming. I always slow down (less than 15 mph) when passing pedestrians on my bike and my golf cart. There already is a law that requires 3 feet distance between golf carts and pedestrians (walkers/bikers). The required 50 feet distance for slowing to 10 mph will cause issues on the multi-modal path, as the majority of the golf carts are not going to want to slow to 10 mph, if they are behind a bicycle.
Enforcing the 10 mph on E-bikes will be as easy as enforcing the 20 mph for golf carts.
