A homeowner has the wrong color shingles on a villa in The Villages.

The home at 1898 Loadstar Ave. in the Fairwinds Villas in the Village of St. James was the subject of a deed compliance hearing Monday at the District Office in Brownwood.

James and Mary Lyn Dost bought the villa in 2012 for $175,000.

On March 3, a complaint was received by Community Standards regarding the color of the shingles at the Dost home. The complainant said the color of the shingles did not comply with the requirements outlined in the Architectural Review Manual. Community Standards inspected the home and found that the shingles were not the proper color.

The Dosts had filed an application with the Architectural Review Committee, and the application was approved with the following stipulation:

“The shingle shall be the same color used at the time of original construction. If the original color is not available, a color closely resembling the original color shall be used.”

However, the roof color applied is neither the original color nor a color closely resembling it, according to testimony presented by Community Standards at Monday’s hearing.

James Dost informed Community Standards that he spoke with the roofing company and the roofing company indicated it would submit a new ARC application with a different shingle color and replace the roof. As of this past week, the home remained out of compliance.

The Dosts were given 45 days to bring the home into compliance. If they fail to do so, they will face $50 daily fines.
