Florida took a giant step backward this week, as Governor DeSantis imposed an additional, and ultimately unconstitutional, layer of state control over how our cities and towns create a welcoming environment for all Floridians.

As DeSantis signed SB 1134 into law, our communities will no longer be allowed to reach out to the diverse groups that make up Florida, going so far as to void existing policies and create penalties for local officials who act to make sure their governments and organizations are inclusive.

The people most affected by SB 1134 are those already navigating barriers to opportunity and representation. Local governments are closest to the people they serve. They understand the unique challenges facing their communities, whether that means addressing disparities in healthcare, supporting LGBTQ+ residents, or ensuring all families feel welcome and represented. This law undermines that work and replaces it with a rigid, one-size-fits-all mandate from Tallahassee.

We will not be silent as these protections are dismantled. We will continue to advocate, organize, and fight for policies that reflect the fundamental truth that every person deserves dignity, fairness, and the opportunity to thrive.

The work does not stop here.

The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus is here to fight for our freedom, our future, and all of our communities.
