A Villager who admitted drinking at a country club has been sentenced after crashing his golf cart at a tunnel.

Scott David Morgan, 56, of the Village of Belvedere, has lost his driver’s license for six months, will be on probation for one year and has been ordered to perform 50 hours of community service following a sentencing hearing this past week in Sumter County Court.

A warrant was issued for his arrest after a blood toxicology sample was returned from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement laboratory showing that Morgan had a blood alcohol level of .259/.261 on Oct. 30 when he crashed his EZ-GO golf cart into a light pole after traveling at a high rate of speed through the golf cart tunnel at County Road 101 near Southern Trace Plaza, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. The golf cart overturned in the crash.

When deputies arrived on the scene, it appeared as if Morgan had been drinking. The Ohio native was “emotional, crying and expressing shame.” He admitted he had been drinking wine at Palmer Legends Country Club.

He struggled through field sobriety exercises and had trouble reciting the alphabet. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation of his injuries and while there, he agreed to allow a blood draw. The sample was sent to the FDLE for testing. A criminal history check revealed he had previously been convicted of driving under the influence in 1999 in Ohio.
