Our community’s walking, bike riding, and golf cart paths are some of our greatest assets in The Villages, providing a space for exercise, relaxation, and neighborly connection. However, these shared areas are increasingly being marred by a growing trend of irresponsible dog ownership.

While the majority of pet owners are diligent, a visible minority continues to disregard local ordinances regarding leash laws and, in particular, waste disposal. This isn’t just a matter of aesthetics or a nuisance. It is a significant public health and safety issue.

Public Safety: Dogs, regardless of how “friendly” their owners claim them to be, can be unpredictable. They pose a risk to residents and other leashed pets. I have been accosted by two aggressive dogs while riding my bike in the past week, one being a German shepherd. Some residents are afraid of dogs or have allergies. Please be considerate of them. We all share these paths.

Health Hazards: Failure to pick up pet waste contaminates our groundwater and can spread diseases to both humans and other animals. It’s bad enough to ride through dog droppings on the paths and have to clean off my bike tires because of an inconsiderate dog owner. And then there are the dog owners who pick up the droppings and toss the plastic bags in the grass. Are you expecting the landscapers to pick up after you?

Being a pet owner is a privilege that comes with the responsibility of respecting the comfort and safety of others. Please follow the rules. Keep your dogs leashed and always carry waste bags. And, please, please do not dispose of your dog’s waste in the receptacles at the mail stations. That is just rude.

Let’s work together to ensure The Villages remains a welcoming environment for everyone—on both two legs and four.
