An Oxford man was arrested after allegedly giving a woman a black eye and later resisting a deputy’s attempts to put him in handcuffs.
Billy Don Marney, 57, was taken into custody early Sunday morning by Sumter County sheriff’s deputies on charges of domestic battery causing bodily harm and resisting an officer without violence.

According to an arrest report, a deputy responded to an Oxford residence at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday in reference to a domestic battery. A woman told the deputy that about a week prior, she and Marney had visited her stepmother’s home in Lake Panasoffkee. When the woman stated she wanted to leave, an argument ensued. During the altercation, Marney allegedly grabbed her by the hair and began hitting her in the head.
The deputy noted the woman had a bruised right eye that appeared to be in the early stages of healing, which was consistent with her timeline of the attack.
When questioned by law enforcement, Marney claimed nothing had occurred and told the deputy the woman was “crazy.” He claimed he had not even noticed her black eye, but maintained he was not the one who caused it.
When the deputy informed Marney he was being placed under arrest and grabbed his arm, Marney allegedly tensed up, became stiff and tried to pull away. The deputy was ultimately forced to push Marney against a marked patrol car to secure him in handcuffs.
Marney is familiar with local law enforcement. He was arrested in May 2025 after he was caught with drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop at a 7-Eleven in Oxford.
Following Sunday’s incident, Marney was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. He was released after posting $2,000 bond.
