To the Editor:
Just saw the “new and improved” trash collection — changed by whom and why? First, let’s start with the comment that for safety reasons throughout the country, this new method is safer. All our streets are low-traffic residential, and any traffic coming the other way has to stop due to clearances on the street.
Second, what’s happening now is double the mileage and fuel since they are making two passes on the same street. Third, the heat conditions here are a little different, and pushing an additional 33% workload on these guys is the unsafe part. Does the person making these changes really think that this extra workload is going to do anything but put added stress on the workers? Now the two-person team will be switching back and forth.
I have a suggestion: How about the “expert” who made these changes go out of their air-conditioned office, put that heavy pencil down, work a week with these guys, and see his thoughts? All this is about, in my unprofessional opinion, is cost savings, which with fuel costs is not saving anything. Every time I see these guys out there picking up anything and everything we throw out, I offer them a bottle of water.
