A man with a suspended license was arrested Tuesday morning after a police officer caught him driving a golf cart on a prohibited roadway in Wildwood.

Kenneth Eric Matthew Wells, 53, of Brandon, was driving a white Yamaha golf cart at about 9:30 a.m. southbound on County Road 462 before turning onto Spanish Harbor Drive, according to an arrest report from the Wildwood Police Department.

An officer initiated a traffic stop because County Road 462 is a 40 mph zone where golf carts are strictly prohibited. The officer also noted the vehicle did not have a license plate attached.

When the officer asked for his driver’s license and vehicle registration, Wells handed over a Florida identification card. He told the officer the vehicle was “only a golf cart” and was not registered.

A routine computer check revealed a lengthy history of driving infractions. Wells’ driver’s license had been suspended since January 2017 and officially canceled in November 2019. His driving record showed multiple indefinite suspensions stemming from unpaid court financial obligations and delinquent child support.

Wells was arrested on misdemeanor charges of driving with a suspended or revoked license and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license. He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center with bond set at $1,000.
