A peaceful rally to protect voting rights will be held from 9-10 a.m. Saturday, July 18, on Morse Boulevard near Lake Sumter Landing.

Participants in this protest will honor the former civil rights icon Rep. John Lewis, who urged people to remember that “Good Trouble Lives On.” The roadside sign-holding rally will stand up for voting rights, democracy and human dignity, as well as speak out against the injustices of the current administration. State Rep. Angie Nixon, Democratic candidate for Senator, will mingle with rally-goers, answer questions and pose for photos. She will be joined by Pamala Kaye Bivins, Democratic nominee for Florida House District 52. Co-hosts will also be present, including members of The Villages Democratic Club, Central Florida Tri-County Indivisible, the Sumter County Democratic Party and the Lake County Democratic Party.

The rally will be accessible by golf cart between the Morse Boulevard and Sillwater Trail roundabounts. Cars can park in public lots and streets in Lake Sumter Landing, but not the nearby Aldi.

The GTLO Weekend of Action, July 17-19, is a nationwide effort to carry forward the spirit of the Civil Rights Movement, particularly the peaceful, organized resistance that led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The focus is “Teach, Reach, Preach.” July 18 marks the sixth year since Lewis’ death.
