To the Editor:

One very serious problem is occurring and little has been said about it: the education given, or lack of education, subjected to our children today.

Recently, the American Federation of Teachers’ union president Randi Weingarten presided over their union meeting. Most of it headlined the strength of her leadership and how well the members are doing. Nothing wrong with that, but she failed to address how poorly the membership is doing their job of educating our children! That wasn’t surprising!

Some alarming statistics are as follows: 40% of our fourth graders can’t read! 35% of 12th graders are not proficient in reading and only 22% are proficient in math! America ranks 31st in public education!

It has been said in many quarters that the most serious problem in America is our education system. Ms. Weingarten’s response to her membership regarding the negative views they were getting was, “We don’t give a s—,” to which the crowd roared with pleasure!

Our grandchildren are being set up for failure with the lack of ability by many of today’s teachers! By the way, Ms. Weingarten only taught full-time for four years. Her salary is approximately $549,000 per year!
