A 76-year-old resident of The Villages was arrested after a physical altercation erupted over a man’s attempt to renew his driver’s license.

Karen Ann Sharp was arrested Thursday afternoon on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery at her home on Grant Way in the Village of Belvedere.

According to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the residence in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival, Sharp told deputies that she and the victim got into an argument because he wanted to drive to the Department of Motor Vehicles to renew his license. Sharp did not want to go with him, nor did she want him driving himself, the report stated.

The man went into the home’s attached garage and opened the door to an SUV. Sharp then allegedly pushed the open driver’s side door into the man to prevent him from getting inside. The man pushed the door back open, causing Sharp to fall backward into a nearby wall. Sharp re-approached the man, who briefly grabbed her by the shoulders before letting go.

The man then left the property in a golf cart.

The man later told deputies that Sharp pushing the door into him had caused him pain. Deputies noted a raised, superficial injury on the man’s left arm where the door struck him. They also observed a bruise on Sharp’s right forearm from where she hit the wall.

Because Sharp initiated the physical contact by pushing the car door, failed to separate herself from the incident, and re-engaged during the altercation, deputies determined she was the primary aggressor.

The redacted arrest report did not disclose the nature of the relationship between Sharp and the man.

Sharp previously made headlines in The Villages earlier this summer when she scored a hole-in-one on June 13.

The Detroit, Michigan native was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. While initially held without bond due to the domestic nature of the charge, she was later released on her own recognizance.
